The Modern Marigold
The Modern Marigold
Born out of joy and passion for serving others and a deep recognition and understanding of many challenges modern students face today, The Modern Marigold draws inspiration from a globally long revered flower with nearly more symbolic meanings than one could count. Marigolds symbolize positive emotions and energy, healing and restoration, auspiciousness, brightness, inner-strength and empowerment, boldness and creativity, determination and optimism. So unique in its color, richness, uses and abilities, they are known to be resilient flowers that can grow and bloom even in adverse environments like hard soils or swamps, much like that of a growing child. In this, my mission is to collaboratively provide these outcomes for your student to encourage lifelong curious, passionate and engaged learners. Incredible and important moments are waiting to happen!
I am an experienced and intuitive educator offering unique and individualized academic coaching experiences for students needing gentle yet meaningful support. I specialize in Kindergarten-12th grade (K-12) executive function and organization, accommodations, meaningful and supportive 1:1 connections, motivation and advocacy. My holistic services aim to encourage and teach personal foundation building and develop a lifelong positive mental outlook that will stabilize and promote endurance through life’s challenges and events. In each session, I weave in opportunities for deeper development of integrity, effective communication, open-mindedness, teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, organization, willingness to learn and empathy. Reframing past negative experiences and replacing them with new beginnings and healthy new habits creates positive personal growth and joy.
*While I am qualified and experienced with many K-12 subject matters, for those that fall outside my abilities or qualifications. I can often provide recommendations for other practitioners. Please contact me to discuss.
About
Years of professional experience in the fields of medicine, law, and emergency management led me to education. As a trained emergency manager with a professional and personal interest in protecting human infrastructure, I embedded myself into a public school to deeply understand their culture, needs, assets and challenges. I told myself I would stay one year and move on. However, I was captivated by my experiences and what I was learning, and realized how much I love being around children. As a mother of two, who were also entering school at that time, I quickly recognized how my growing systematic knowledge was also helping me thrive as a parent who was navigating new things in understanding my own children’s academic experiences and needs. I came to see how schools, particularly during and now after the global covid pandemic, are similar to activated emergency operations centers, often deluged with many urgent issues throughout the day and limited resources to address them despite their best intentions and protocols. I am passionate about helping students thrive in uncertainty and hardship and enjoy celebrating their successes!
My individualized coaching is informed by my unique and intuitive combination of emergency management and classroom skills to address the growing and consistent needs of students. In my own way, I have incorporated 5 phases of Emergency Management to address student needs: Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery as it relates to diverse and unique children in academic and social environments. By mixing in compassion, empathy, patience, creativity, humor and fun, I am able to build trusting relationships with my students.

Compliments
April is patient and kind and got to the root of our child's barrier to learning and made helpful suggestions we could use as co-parents in different households. Being on the same page and using tools she recommended helped us better meet our child's needs, who truly did show academic and emotional improvements.
- Connor & Tim
My daughter and son began working with April during the pandemic. Even through a screen she reached them with her warmth and dedication, giving them the exact support they needed. She even sent them postcards in the mail for encouragement and to stay in touch! They love her!
- Suzy
April is a gifted educator! Unafraid of getting dirty, silly, creative and taking it all in stride.
- Maura H.
As a parent, April has shown me ways to better understand and support my kids academically. As a result of her intentional work with my family, we are all better off!
- Mary B.
April has worked with our neurodiverse child, who struggled with awkward remote classes during the pandemic and then transitioning back to in-person learning. She reached them in ways no one else could. She just knows. We recommend 10/10!

FAQ
What is the role of an Academic Coach?
An Academic Coach serves as a 1:1 mid-level professional who is a supportive partner and liaison between parties such as students, parents, guardians, teachers, and specialists (ex. therapists, doctors, etc.). They work with students having difficulty in a range of subject matter areas:
How does academic coaching help my student?
Working with an Academic Coach provides your student with external structure and encouragement to change behavior, monitor progress and create a sense of pride through accountability, accomplishment and hard work. Focusing on the student’s emotional intelligence and regulation inspires academic excellence. Coaching increases confidence and feelings of empowerment and establishes positive habits and effectiveness that develops a lifelong positive mental outlook that stabilizes and promotes endurance through any challenge. These richly rewarding transferable skills will serve all areas of life!
How do people use their coaching sessions?
Many people use their coaching sessions to plan and carry out tasks. Regular meetings with an Academic Coach can help identify, address and support blind spots and/or provide much-needed motivation and reminders to follow through on tasks and prioritize workload.
What Academic Coaching is not:
Academic support for your student is not therapy. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent existing known or unknown learning disabilities or challenges. I am not a replacement for your student’s teaching team, but rather a supportive professional who works in tandem with them in the best interest of your student.
